The Blue Requiem Mystery
And So It Begins...
The sixty year old Ms Mae's hands were clutched so tight her knuckles glowed white. She did not generally spend her Wednesday mornings in a police interrogation room. Detective Armando Taddio entered the room with a nice hot cup of tea and some biscuits for himself and Ms Mae. "Please dear lady, take one," Ms Mae reached out for a biscuit. Her hand trembled and she kept her eyes on him rather than looking at the biscuit tray.
She nibbled on a corner of the shortbread, she cupped her hand beneath her mouth to catch any errant cumbs. Detective Taddio took two biscuits and plonked his frame down on the cheap vinyl chairs which groaned under his weight, "Ms Mae, you work at the Tyler Ward, it is an intensive care unit or I.C.U. is that correct?" The lady nodded warily.
The Detective continued, "You have not worked there that long have you?" Ms Mae nodded and grabbed for tea.
After taking a large gulp she spoke, "I have only worked on the Tyler Ward for six months, before that I was the cleaner for the Mental Health Unit. I have worked for the hospital as a cleaner for twelve years in total. I would like to ask why am I here?"
Taddio smiled and gently spoke, "The Tyler Ward is under investigation, this particular ward has seen three times the amount of fatalities then it used to. Considerably more than is acceptable."
Ms Mae opened her mouth and clamped her hand over it, "Oh, my that is bad!" she dropped her voice to a hushed whisper, "Do you suspect foul play?"
Armando shook his head and placed his large hand over her small withered one, "While we have not dismissed any possibilities at the moment, it seems as though the patients as died in natural ways without any assistance. Obviously we are doing a thorough investigation. Nothing is being ruled out and no stone is to be left unturned."
At that moment the door of the interrogation room opened and a young woman entered. Taddio stood up and shook the young female constable's hand, "Constable Blackwell, good to see you. I would like to introduce you to Ms Mae. She is here about the Tyler Case."
The female police officer smiled revealing two small dimples on her cheeks. Her merry brown eyes were directed at Ms Mae and she said, "Good Morning Ms Mae, has Detective Taddio been taking care of you? Oh good he did get you some tea. Detective Taddio wants me to observe you interview, you don't mind do you? I am an apprentice of sorts." Ms Mae shook her head, her shoulders relaxed and she took another bite of her biscuit.
Constable Blackwell took out her notebook and started taking notes at the end of the table. The Detective continued his inquiry, "Ms Mae, what are you thoughts about the operations of Tyler Ward?"
Ms Mae puffed out her chest with self important pride, "The doctors and nurses on the ward are all very professional and efficient. despite what you have said about Tyler ward I would be quite happy if any of my relatives were treated there. If anything they are too professional."
Taddio raised his eyebrows, "Too professional, please explain what you mean by that?"
Ms Mae leaned closer, "Doctors and the nurses say all the right thing to patients and their families and they look like they care but they don't really. I mean they care, but not about the patient. You see patients in the I.C.U. don't look like people. They are hooked up to respirators and monitors. They are fed with drips, they can't speak or even look at you. In time the medical forget that they were once human. The doctors and nurses care about defeating death. The patients are not people enough for them to feel connected to. If they care about anyone it is the patient's families. "
Armando nodded with understanding, Ms Mae's observations were akin to his own,"I think it would be a terrible thing, Ms Mae, to be in such a place, it really is a kind of living death isn't it?"
Ms Mae nodded, "Oh it is a terrible thing, I do my best for them, I bring flowers and open the blinds to let some sun in. I even bought myself one of those Ipod things, with the music and such." Constable Blackwell pulled hers out of her pocket and held it up for Ms Mae to see, "Yes just like hers, well on these things you can get audio books. I bought one of those speaker jobies that go with it and I play audio books for the patients. I don't know if they can hear the stories or not but I like to think that on some level it helps them. Mark Twain is my favourite, I frequently play his works,"
The Detective leaned back and put his hands on his considerable stomach, "Ahh, Mr Twain. Both myself and Constable Blackwell are fans too, are we not Blackwell?" The attractive Constable nodded with clear enthusiasm. They all basked in the presence of their mutual admiration society.
Detective Taddio nodded approvingly at Ms Mae, "You are clearly a kind and thoughtful person, I am sure the patients are glad that they have someone like you there. In your opinion is there anyone on the ward who is suspicious?" Ms Mae started to jiggle and a bead of sweat ran down her forehead, her hands were wringing each other furiously. The large Detective smiled, "It is fine Ms Mae you can tell us."
Ms Mae dropped her voice to a whisper as if she were afraid she would be over heard, "Well it is not much really it is just that there is this new intern Doctor Tame. He is on at the same time I am, I don't really like him, to him I don't exist. He is one of those types. He is the sort who only acknowledges people who are doctors, the rest of us don't matter. Every second shift he is on there is a Code Blue called. It is in his eyes, he loves it you know. It is the adrenaline. And..."
Taddio and Blackwell leaned forward toward Ms Mae, "Please my dear lady, tell us the rest."
Mrs Mae was in full gossip mode, "Well, interns are kept at a distance in the I.C.U. often they just observe and they are always trying to get to do things. The exception for this rule is when there is a Code Blue. The doctor who first gets to the site runs the code. They take charge- and well, Doctor Tame is often the first one there."
Taddio and Blackwell looked at each other and nodded, "Thankyou so much Ms Mae, you can go back to work for now but we might need to chat with you again, is that okay?" The elderly lady nodded and swallowed her tea quickly before departing.
Armando and Constance rushed to the hospital. They requested the shift sheets and the record of Code Blue's. The two police officers combed through the files in the Doctor's lounge. Blackwell manned the highlighter and correlated Tame's shifts with the Code Blues. Sure enough, a pattern did start to appear. Not all of the Codes were unsuccessful, in fact Tame had saved most of the patients in that situation. The sheer number of them was surprising. The file suggested that every shift of Dr Tames involved at least one. There was enough coincidence here for the Taddio to run off to find Doctor Tame.
Soon the young man was sitting in the Doctor's lounge facing Taddio and Blackwell, "Doctor Tame, you know of course about the aberrant number of deaths that occur on your ward right? Do you have any explanation of this," Tame was no where near as nervous as Ms Mae had been he sat there in the seat staring at the Detective with barely concealed disdain.
Dr Tame in an exasperated manner said, "Look Officer, I know you are doing your job but, seriously, this is getting ridiculous. I have faced the hospital inquiry, the nosy inspector from the Department of Health and I have already given my statement to your department as well. I have life saving work to do and you are all, frankly, in my way. Look, I will tell you what I told them. People who come to the Tyler ward are, for all intents and purposes, dead already. They live off of machines, if it was not for our mechanical trickery then they would be dead. The fact that a couple of them don't make it is not our fault. You people need to work out the difference between 'fail to save' and 'managed to kill.' For we Doctors knowing the difference is critical. Have I failed to save patients- yes, tragically, absolutely! Have I killed them- no, definitely and totally not."
Taddio's expression, or rather lack of expression, had not changed during the Doctor's rant. "I see Doctor. Constable Blackwell and I am concerned you see about the amount of Code Blues that you have personally dealt with. Look at these files, it seems a patient is three times more likely to need resuscitation when you are working. Can you explain this?"
Tame grabbed the files and looked over them, slowly the papers captured more and more of his attention. His finger was moving between the time of the Code Blues and his own shifts, "I see now why you want to talk to me. I do look guilty as hell, I can tell you that yes even I have noticed the increased amount of Code Blues. I tried to spend more time on the ward to watch the patients. We lost a great deal more in two months ago before I started patrolling the ward. I am the doctor who is most often there and therefore I am the one who often the first respondent to the Code Blue."
Armando nodded and Constance took off her cuffs, "Doctor Tame I need to take you into custody, put your hands behind your back." Doctor Tame backed away from the encroaching officer.
"I did not do this, please let me leave without the cuffs, I work here and my reputation will be destroyed if you march me through the hospital with cuffs on."
Taddio shook his head, "Sorry old chum, regulations and all."
Tame demanded, "I want my lawyer." The Detective nodded consent and watched as the Constable cuffed the young doctor. The three of them left the lounge and started to walk through the Tyler Ward.
Suddenly the alarm went off at a patient's bed. Tame begged, "Please unlock these. Let me do my job. Quick, the man is dying." Taddio looked at the old man who looked a little like his Dad. He nodded again and Blackwell unlocked the cuffs.
Tame rushed to the bed. He roughly pushed Ms Mae, who had returned to work, out of the way. She fell backwards. She gathered up her Ipod and dock and got out of the way. Tame checked the monitor and the alarm was doing the monotone beep. He grabbed the E.C.G paddles. He called out "Clear" and placed the paddles over the old mans chest. The man's body jumped. The monitor did a single blip but then returned to a flat line. Tame waited and then did it again. This time it took and the man's heart started to beat.
Tame returned to the waiting officers. Blackwell started to read Tame his rights. "You have the right to remain sil..." Blackwell stopped as suddenly, 'Tom Sawyer' audio novel was blasting out at top volume. Taddio and Blackwell turned toward the sound.
Ms Mae had gathered up her ipod and sound system and had moved further up the ward. Ms Mae smiled and waved. Taddio looked at her and frowned, "Ms Mae, why did you move your music machine?"
Ms Mae smiled. "Well Doctor Tame was needed all the plugs for the old man, so I moved up here." Taddio walked over next to Ms Mae. Sure enough there was a plethora of plugs and outlets. One cord hung loose. its socket swinging in the empty air like a hangman's noose. Taddio put his hand up at the speakers for the Ipod and followed the path of the cord. The plug for the Ipod was taking up a socket near the cord that was hanging loose. Taddio quickly pulled the Ipod dock cord out and put the other plug back in the socket.
"Ms Mae, do you often disconnect a cord when you play the audio books?" Ms Mae looked confused, "Well no, not all the time but sometimes, if I need to. I am too old to get down to the plugs on the ground so I use these outlets for the Ipod and the vacume. Mostly there is an empty place but sometimes, they are all full." Doctor Tame came over to the old lady,
"You stupid bitch, do you not understand that this is an I.C.U. These patients live off electricity. When you play around with the cords they die. How God damn stupid can you get?"
Ms Mae looked at the plugs and then back at the doctor, "Do you mean I killed all those people? It was me! How many did I kill?"
Taddio used a quiet and caring voice, he truly felt sympathy for this woman with a kind heart and a careless mind, "We don't really know Ms Mae. We do know that roughly fifty more people have died on the ward then should have over the time that you have worked on this ward." Ms Mae crumbled to the floor.
"Blackwell, I don't think we need to cuff Ms Mae, just take her to the squad car." Constable Blackwell gently put her arm around the sobbing Ms Mae and directed her from her own personal killing ground.
Taddio, gathered the evidence up and bagged it. He took photos of the plugs in the I.C.U. He then apologised to Doctor Tame. Tame shook Taddio's hand, "Frankly I don't give a rats about your accusations, the fact is less people will die here now and that is the outcome we were both looking for."
This case was closed for Detective Taddio and Constable Blackwell but he knew that for Ms Mae it would never, ever, be closed.
Later that evening Armando waited for Constance in the local drinking den of Murphy's. The police always came here when a case was solved or when the grime of the streets became too much to cope with. Taddio nursed his his Bourbon and watched the football game on the large screen behind the bar. Suddenly the bar was lit up as the door opened and Blackwell entered. He was pleased to see that for a change her hair was loose and she was wearing civilian clothes, a soft musk cashmere sweater and tight blue jeans. Every man turned toward the vision of loveliness that intruded on their dark male sanctuary.
The Detective smiled, his protege always had that effect on men. She noticed but did not seem to care. She just made her way toward Taddio without paying any attention to the lustful looks that were cast her way. Armando liked her common sense manner and focus, that is why he had agreed to undertake her training, "So Blackwell, what did you think about our case today?"
"Honestly I thought it was the doctor, he had motive, means and the personality type. I would never have figured that it was Ms Mae. Thank heavens she started playing that story. I don't think I will ever think about 'Tom Sawyer' the same way again."
Taddio nodded approvingly, "We must never forget that most people are accidental killers rather than blood thirsty cold blooded murderers. We can not overlook carelessness or negligence as a weapon. They are truly the most dangerous and deadly of all the possible tools of destruction." Blackwell ordered a chardonnay and nodded in agreement.
She ran her fingers through her hair and smiled,"Still who would ever figure that the greatest mass murderers our city has ever seen is a sixty year old cleaning woman? The formidable and terrifying duo of Ms Mae and Mark Twain!"
Taddio lit a cigar while he ignored Blackwell wrinkling her nose in disgust, "Well, in the words of our accomplice Mr Twain, ' Apparently there is nothing that cannot happen today.' Rather an apt observation one would think."

I hope you check out Taddio and Blackwell's next case. Two women have been murdered, they have absolutely nothing in common except that they share The Crossbow Killer. Taddio and his attractive apprentice Blackwell need to work out in what way are these two women the same before they can find the killer. It will take all of Taddio's cunning to solve this baffling case.
